Exhibition and Documentary Film
150 years of KVNM
University Library, downtown Utrecht, 24 August through 24 November
On 19 November 1868 ‘some art friends’ were invited by the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst (Association for the Promotion of Music) to get together in Amsterdam to found a ‘Society for Netherlandish – specifically North Netherlandish – Music History’. This meeting was also attended by the community-minded medical doctor and music lover Jan Pieter Heije, who wrote a few months later that reactions were so numerous and enthusiastic that it was ‘as if an electric shock went through the country’.
The exhibition displays the history of a Society that has contributed to Dutch music history for the past 150 years and to the development of musicology. This history will be illustrated by letters, manuscripts, photos and publications from our own archive and from other archives. During the exhibition a documentary film by Jochem van der Heide, illustrating the history of the KVNM with interviews and a variety of photos on recent activities, will be shown.
The exhibition is from 24 August through 24 November at the downtown University Library, Utrecht. Admission is free of charge.
The documentary film will be shown during the exhibition, and will also be available online as of 24 August.
